On the day Steve Spurrier was named as an ambassador and consultant for Florida’s athletic department, he also said sophomore Luke Del Rio is the Gators’ starting quarterback.
While that, frankly, seems a given heading into fall camp, Gators coach Jim McElwain never has come out and said it. But during a teleconference to talk about his “ambassadorship,” Spurrier was asked a question about Florida’s quarterbacks.
“I know that ‘Coach Mac’ is fired up about the ones he has here now,” Spurrier said. ” ‘Coach Nuss’ (Gators offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier) is also. Let’s give these guys a chance to play and hopefully one of them will emerge as a top-flight player that everybody can get behind.
