Now that he is retired, Steve Spurrier is having an increasing role with the Florida Gators.
The school announced Friday Spurrier has been named ambassador and consultant for the Gators athletic department.
Last month, UF named the football field after Spurrier, who was a Heisman-winning quarterback and championship-winning coach with the Gators.
"It's a great day for the Gator Nation to be able to welcome Coach Spurrier back home," UF's outgoing athletic director Jeremy Foley said in a statement. "He has served as a tremendous ambassador to the University and the athletic department for 50-plus years and it's only fitting that at this point in his career, he is back in Gainesville.
