Florida's 3 Most Likely Bowl Destinations

The Florida Gators have struggled this season, but they'll still be going bowling after missing out in 2013. There's plenty of optimism around the program now that Jim McElwain has stepped in to replace Will Muschamp...so where is Florida most likely to end up this holiday season?

Birmingham Bowl (AAC vs. SEC)

Sat., Jan. 3, 1:00 p.m. ET

Legion Field, Birmingham, AL

Because of their 6-5 record, Florida has limited options for bowl games...and the Birmingham Bowl is probably their worst-case scenario. Not only would they miss out on a marquee opponent, it's one of the latest games in the bowl season...and that makes it tough to generate outside interest The Gators would also prefer to play somewhere closer to home to draw more fans, but they might not have a choice.

Belk Bowl (ACC vs. SEC)

Tue., Dec. 30, 6:30 p.m. ET

Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, NC

The Belk Bowl is a long shot at this point, with the Birmingham looking possible and our next option most likely. Still, there's an outside shot the Gators land here if Mizzou can land somewhere better-than-expected and South Carolina ends up elsewhere. If the Gators do land here, look for them to take on NC State or a higher-profile opponent in Notre Dame.

Duck Commander Independence Bowl (SEC vs ACC)

Sat., Dec. 27, 2:30 p.m. ET

Independence Stadium, Shreveport, LA

This is the most likely destination for the Gators. They'll get the chance to play a good team from the ACC, potentially Virginia Tech...but ideally, Miami. Florida is interested in this bowl above the other options because it's earlier in the bowl season, which draws more television viewers, and the Independence Bowl also has a higher payout than every other bowl game they're a candidate for.
