Signing Sekera gives Oilers a No. 1 defenceman

EDMONTON - With the arrival of Andrej Sekera almost seven years to the day Edmonton got another Slovakian blue-liner, Lubomir Visnovsky, from the Los Angeles Kings, the Oilers have their top-pairing defenceman.

Is Sekera a true No. 1? Not if you’re thinking about the Chicago Blackhawks’ Duncan Keith or the Ottawa Senators’ Erik Karlsson. But he will be one in Edmonton.

Sekera can play 22-25 minutes a night and get the puck up to Taylor Hall and company for breakouts. He’s also very strong and can play both the left and right side, but he’s not a dynamic offensive guy, which would make him even more dangerous.
