EDMONTON - When new Philadelphia Flyers head coach Dave Hakstol was growing up on a farm just outside of Warburg, he spent his Saturday nights watching Hockey Night in Canada on TV, an antennae mounted on the roof that often went astray if the prairie winds started howling.
“I was the youngest kid of three, so who do you think went up the ladder to the roof?” he asked. “We kind of had a transfer system, with somebody inside watching the TV, somebody would be standing outside and they’d yell to the person on the roof. With only three channels, it’s pretty critical to get the picture as clear as you could, but when it went out, it was pretty fuzzy.
