LAFAYETTE, La. – The Drake University softball team earned a pair of wins on Friday, Feb. 24 at the Mardi Gras Invitational presented by DoubleTree. In the first game, Drake (10-5) edged Dartmouth, 3-2, in 10 innings before blanking Maryland, 3-0, to close the day.
Drake had outstanding pitching in each game between the junior duo of Nicole Newman (Madison, Wis.) and Kailee Smith (Murrieta, Calif.). Against Dartmouth (0-1), Smith started and allowed just two runs (one earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts in 7.1 innings. Newman came on in relief in the eighth inning and locked down the Big Green.
