ARLINGTON, Texas — Detroit Tigers left-hander Matthew Boyd will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the remainder of the 2023 season.

The 32-year-old exited Monday's start against the Texas Rangers in the first inning after throwing 15 pitches. The date of the appointment for his upcoming surgery is unclear.

Boyd was diagnosed with a partial sprain of his ulnar collateral ligament. The typical recovery time for the procedure is 12 to 18 months.

The Tigers signed Boyd to a one-year, $10 million contract in the offseason. He underwent left flexor tendon surgery in September 2021, so the Tommy John procedure marks his second arm surgery in less than two years.
