2018 Baseball Hall of Fame: Jack Morris, Ron Gardenhire crossed paths on memorable Twins team

DETROIT -- It was 1991 and Ron Gardenhire was a newly promoted assistant coach on Tom Kelly's staff with the Minnesota Twins.

Jack Morris was a star pitcher who grew up in the Twin Cities and had just signed a then-sizeable contract worth at least $3 million.

Morris was 36. Gardenhire was just 33.

Intimidating for a coach in his first year in the big leagues? Maybe a little.

"He's a grumpy guy, we all know that," said Gardenhire with a smile, even if he really wasn't joking. "The day before he pitched, the day he pitched, you just cleared out and let him do his thing.
