Verlander, Tigers helpless against powerful Tribe

Detroit -- It had to feel like he was living his worst nightmare.

Justin Verlander kept throwing pitches and Indians hitters kept clubbing them over the fence.

The Indians hit four homers off Verlander in the fifth inning, breaking open a 2-2 tie and sending them to a series-sweeping 9-3 win Sunday. It was their ninth straight win over the Tigers and ninth straight overall.

The fifth inning was surreal. Victor Martinez’s first of two home runs on the day had just tied the game in the bottom of the fourth before the fireworks started.

Juan Uribe hit the first pitch of the inning – a hanging breaking ball at 78 mph – into the seats in left.
