Tigers discussing trade for Rangers reliever Joakim Soria

In this Tigers rumors and news update, the Detroit Tigers are currently engaged in trade discussions with the Texas Rangers in regards to coveted Rangers closer Joakim Soria.

According to Jon Morosi of FOX Sports 1, the Rangers and Tigers are mulling over scenarios for a deal as we speak:

Despite the Rangers' MLB-worst 38-57 record, Soria is currently 16-for-17 on save opportunities with a 2.67 ERA. Soria has functioned in a setup role before, so acquiring him wouldn't necessarily spell the end of Joe Nathan's time as the Tigers' closer.

However, picking up Soria would give the Tigers plenty of options going forward. If Nathan continues to struggle, manager Brad Ausmus could pull the trigger on a change as the pennant race plot thickens, or even opt to go with a closer-by-committee (of two) as August and September roll on.
