Tigers add prospect Farmer to taxed bullpen

ST. PETERSBURG -- The Tigers swapped out extra relievers Monday afternoon by recalling right-hander Buck Farmer from Triple-A Toledo and optioning Kyle Ryan back to the Mud Hens.

The moves keep the Tigers' bullpen at eight pitchers ahead of Monday's series opener against the Rays, as manager Brad Ausmus tries to handle a relief corps that has been heavily taxed with innings over the past week, both with extra-inning games and quick exits by struggling starters such as Shane Greene. It also helps address the identity crisis for Alex Wilson and Blaine Hardy, allowing Ausmus to use them in tight situations and short appearances rather than saving them for long work.
