Red Wings fall to ninth overall in NHL draft lottery

As they prepare for their highest pick in more than two decades, the Detroit Red Wings face an interesting draft class.

Tonight's draft lottery resulted with the Wings getting the ninth overall selection in the 2017 draft, scheduled for June 23-24 in Chicago. The New Jersey Devils won the lottery to select first overall, the Philadelphia Flyers, second overall and the Dallas Stars, third overall.

It is not considered a particularly strong group of prospects, and there is likely to be considerable discrepancy in where teams have players ranked after the top two choices. Players ranked near the range of the Wings' pick include forward Eeli Tolvanen and defenseman Cale Makar.
