The Detroit Red Wings will be several players short when training camp begins next month.

General manager Ken Holland told the Free Press today that forward Tomas Jurco had surgery for a back injury, and prospect Vili Saarijarvi had wrist surgery. The Wings also will be without eight players who are scheduled to compete in the World Cup of Hockey.

Jurco, 23, injured himself while working out in his native Slovakia, Holland said. The Wings brought him over to the U.S. for surgery, which he had about a week ago.

“It'll be 4-6 weeks of doing nothing, or little, and then see where he is at," Holland said.
