On August 26th, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick sent the sports world into a frenzy by sitting during the national anthem before the 49ers’ preseason game against the Green Bay Packers. The protest was to bring awareness of the injustices against people of color in the United States of America have endured, and have continued to endure, while forcing America to realize that the discriminatory nature of the police force has continued for far too long. He explained his protest:
I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick told NFL Media in an exclusive interview after the game.
