With heavy hearts, Manchester United aims to lift a city’s spirits

>> Manchester is a divided soccer city, what with football supporters pledging their allegiance to United or City. But in the aftermath of the terrorist attack Monday, United will aim to help lift the spirits of England’s second-largest city Wednesday in the Europa League final against Ajax at the aptly named Friends Arena in suburban Stockholm.

A moment’s silence will be observed before kickoff. Players will wear black armbands. UEFA will cut back the usual pomp and circumstance typical before a continental final.

“Tomorrow evening should be a feast,” Ajax Manager Peter Bosz said Tuesday.
