UEFA-sanctioned soccer matches halted indefinitely in Israel

The move affects top Israeli clubs Maccabi Haifa and Maccabi Tel Aviv. Reigning Israeli Premier League champion Maccabi Haifa is competing in the Europa League, while Maccabi Tel Aviv is playing in the Europa Conference League, a third-tier European competition.

UEFA also postponed upcoming matches for both teams, with Maccabi Haifa’s Oct. 26 game at Villarreal pushed to Dec. 6 and Maccabi Tel Aviv’s home match against Zorya Luhansk moved from Oct. 26 to Nov. 25.

In its Thursday announcement, UEFA also said Maccabi Haifa’s youth team has withdrawn from the UEFA Youth League.

“The Israel Football Association and its clubs Maccabi Haifa FC and Maccabi Tel-Aviv have been requested to propose alternative venues/stadiums (which must comply with all applicable UEFA regulations) outside the territory of Israel for their home matches to be used for as long as this decision remains in force,” the governing body said.
