Why did the PFA fail to act sooner on claims of horrific child abuse?

Long before he informed Chelsea, Gary Johnson told some pretty important people about the abuse he suffered as a 13-year-old from chief scout Eddie Heath. He says he called the Professional Footballers’ Association; and that they never called back.

Maybe Johnson didn’t make clear why he was reaching out. It isn’t the sort of thing you blurt to the first person who picks up the telephone. But the PFA does have a head of player welfare and Johnson was a player.

He started 16 games for Chelsea and made three substitute appearances between September 1977 and December 1980.
