Rockies blast their way to another series victory, topping the Cardinals with a wild eighth inning

In a late May case study of the seriousness of their postseason aspirations, the free-swinging, tricky-pitching Rockies hosted the St. Louis Cardinals at Coors Field for a three-game series that foreshadowed a possible wild card chase. Bud Black, meanwhile, spent his Memorial Day weekend mowing the lawn.

“It’s therapeutic for me,” the Rockies first-year manager said. “Some people like to vacuum. I like to cut the grass.”

Was he zoning out with two hands on the push-mower thinking about potential pitching matchups? Contemplating the human place in a chaotic universe?

“A lot of different things,” he said.
