Having come from a broken home in a rough part of Los Angeles, Darian Hagan recalled having to take out an emergency loan as a college student so he could do laundry and take a date to dinner.
Hagan now mentors University of Colorado players with similar backgrounds and money issues as director of player development for the CU football program. He has been described as a "father figure" to many athletes.
"When you come to a place like Colorado and see that some of your teammates don't have to worry about having $20 in their pocket but you don't have anything, you feel sad, you feel bad," Hagan said.
