Sweden wins world ice hockey championship on penalty shots over Canada

COLOGNE, Germany — Sweden won the ice hockey world championship with a 2-1 victory on penalty shots over two-time defending champion Canada on Sunday.

Canada failed to get the puck past Sweden goaltender Henrik Lundqvist on its four penalty shots, from Nathan MacKinnon, Brayden Point, Ryan O’Reilly and Mitch Marner. O’Reilly’s shot hit the post and Lundqvist, the New York Rangers’ veteran, made saves on the other three.

At the other end, against Avalanche goalie Calvin Pickard, the Swedes got penalty-shot successes from Nicklas Backstrom and Oliver Ekman-Larsson. Pickard also made a save on William Nylander and saw Avalanche teammate Gabe Landeskog’s shot go wide for the Swedes.
