Erik Johnson joins Avs’ long injury list but Mikko Rantanen closing in on return

Avs defenseman Erik Johnson, who suffered an upper-body injury Saturday when former Avs forward Alex Kerfoot cross-checked him into the end boards, is day-to-day, coach Jared Bednar said Monday. Kerfoot, now with the Toronto Maple Leafs, was given a two-game suspension by NHL Player Safety on Monday.

In other injury news Mikko Rantanen, who has missed 14 games with an injury to his lower left leg, was a full-practice participant Monday in a red non-contact sweater. Bednar said Rantanen is doubtful for Wednesday’s game against visiting Edmonton but has a good chance to play in the home-and-home weekend series against the Blackhawks that begins Friday at Chicago.
