Andong Song becomes 1st Chinese-born player drafted in NHL

History was made Saturday when Andong Song became the first Chinese-born player to be selected in the NHL draft.

The New York Islanders selected the defenseman in the sixth round with the 172nd overall pick.

The 6-foot-1, 194-pound Song began playing hockey on small ice rinks in Beijing before his family moved to Canada when he was 10, according to the Associated Press.

Song, 18, played at Lawrenceville School in New Jersey where he was selected a Prep All-Star by NJ.com. He recorded three goals and seven assists in 26 games last year. He also played on the China U-18 team.
