Instant Reaction: Cavs Use Huge Run To Blow Past Pelicans, Win 118-111

The Pelicans came out strong and led by as many as 11 points in the second quarter, but the Cavaliers were able to cut that down to five by halftime as New Orleans took a 56-51 lead into the break.

Everything changed in the second half as Cleveland took the game over in the third and stayed hot in the fourth, pulling away for the easy win.

Turning Point:

New Orleans was in control of this game and up 78-69 late in the third quarter, but Cavs point guard Kyrie Irving took over and went on a 9-0 run by himself to tie the game back up. That seemed to shock the Pelicans, and Cleveland continued to ride that momentum into the fourth.

Key Stat:

The Cavaliers out-rebounded New Orleans 45-40 which isn't a big number in itself, but it shows that they neutralized what was supposed to be the Pelicans' strength coming into the game.

Cleveland MVP:

Irving scored 13 points in that 3rd quarter and turned the game around, but he played well all game. He finished with 32 points - 27 of which came in the 2nd half - and nine assists.

LeBron James also had a huge game with his 49th career triple double (32 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists).

New Orleans MVP:

Ryan Anderson finished with 32 points for the Pelicans, but 23 of which came in their dominant first half. He made five of seven shots from behind the arc in the first two quarters.

Anthony Davis also played well with 27 points and 14 rebounds.

What Did We Learn?

Cleveland showed some resiliency for the second straight game, which will serve them well going forward. They didn't hang their heads when they were losing late, but instead came together and played their best basketball of the game. Every team faces adversity - especially in the playoffs - and knowing this team can overcome it is an excellent sign.

As for the Pelicans, Anderson's first-half barrage was their only form of consistent offense in this game. The didn't pass the ball well and players made some very selfish plays, which is why Cleveland was able to go on their long run. New Orleans has talented players, but they need to play better together to reach their full potential.

What’s Next?

Cleveland has the next three days off before facing the Celtics in Boston on Friday, while the Pelicans return home to have the Lakers on Wednesday.
