The Browns cut kicker Brett Maher on Tuesday.
The move cleared the way for rookie seventh-round draft pick Zane Gonzalez and incumbent kicker Cody Parkey to duel this offseason.
On Saturday, Gonzalez became the first kicker drafted by the Browns since 1989. He made 23-of-25 field goals this past season for Arizona State, including 7-of-9 on attempts of 50 yards or longer, and won the Lou Groza Award, given annually to the nation's best collegiate kicker.
"We feel very comfortable that [Gonzalez] brings the characteristics that we want in our kicker. He had an outstanding career at Arizona State," Browns coach Hue Jackson said Saturday.
