Crosley Field was on its last legs, but the grand, aging, outdated ballpark had one more Opening Day left.

What co-authors John Erardi and Greg Rhodes described in their 2004 chronicle of Cincinnati openers titled “Opening Day” as “Crosley Field’s long good-bye” started on April 6, 1970, with a game against the Montreal Expos. Lee May hit a fourth-inning two-run home run and drove in three runs, and Bernie Carbo and Bobby Tolan also hit fourth-inning solo homers as the “Big Red Machine” picked up in 1970 where it left off in 1969.
