The Chicago Blackhawks recalled goaltender Lars Johansson from the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League on Sunday.
In a corresponding move, the Hawks sent down rookie forward Nick Schmaltz to Rockford. He’s the first rookie this season the Hawks have reassigned to the AHL.
Johansson will serve as the Hawks backup goaltender for Scott Darling, who is pushed into the starting role as Corey Crawford recovers from an appendectomy procedure he had Saturday in Philadelphia. Crawford’s timetable for return is uncertain.
