Blackhawks lose Trevor van Riemsdyk to Vegas in expansion draft

Defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk was selected by the Vegas Golden Knights from the Blackhawks in the expansion draft on Wednesday.

Van Riemsdyk, 25, joined the Blackhawks as a college free agent prior to the 2014-15 season. He had five goals and 11 assists and averaged 18:25 of ice time in 58 games last season. He was a part of their 2015 Stanley Cup championship team.

Van Riemsdyk has one year remaining on a two-year deal and has a cap hit of $825,000.

The Blackhawks will need to fill the void left by van Riemsdyk as a right-handed shot defenseman.
