Flames goaltending prospect Jon Gillies turned away 35 shots in effort

EDMONTON — At first, it appeared as though Jon Gillies didn’t get the memo.

On a night where the Edmonton Oilers christened their shiny, new home, Rogers Place, with the first NHL game in the $613.5 million arena, the Calgary Flames goaltender nearly spoiled the debut.

Gillies was outstanding for the Flames, but didn’t get much in the way of support in a 4-2 loss to the Oilers in the Edmonton portion of the split-squad encounter between the teams.

The Flames prospect, working his way back after missing the most of the 2015-2016 NCAA season with a hip injury, turned aside 35 shots in the loss.
