West Valley City police to release body camera footage from fatal shooting of 20-year-old man

West Valley City • Police on Tuesday afternoon were preparing to release body camera footage that showed a West Valley City police officer shoot a 20-year-old black man.

The police officer shot Elijah James Smith after the young man ran from police and went into a house on April 8.

Smith had earlier run from police officers, who were searching the area for someone suspected of stealing from a cell phone store near 3400 South on Redwood Road. Smith matched the suspected thief’s description, police said.
