Utah lawmakers turned down a tax cut for big families in March. Now they’re considering a $22M reduction during their one-day special session.

During the lead-up to a special legislative session Wednesday afternoon, few details were known of a proposed $22 million tax cut for large families.

The intended sponsor, Rep. Tim Quinn, R-Heber City, was traveling during morning committee hearings. His absence led to legislative leaders speaking in broad terms about a tax cut vote they expected later in the day.

“That’s the floor of what we’re looking at,” Rep. Dan McCay, R-Riverton, said of the $22 million figure. “There may be more available. We just don’t know the answer to that yet and we’ll know very shortly.”

The tax cut is intended to soften the blow of recent federal tax changes to middle-income earners with children.
