Nets part ways with popular executive

Money used to be no object to Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov. That was then. This is now.

In a sign that the Nets are in a new mode of trying to save where they can, Nets assistant GM Bobby Marks was laid off Tuesday – his contract not renewed. Marks had been with the organization for 20 years and was assistant GM since 2010, in charge mostly of the salary cap.

Speaking of the cap, Prokhorov finished a second straight season with the largest payroll that was beyond the luxury-tax threshold. Their payroll plus luxury tax payments are expected to soar over $105 million, which is at least better than 2013-14 when they paid an NBA record $190 million.
