Tigers, J.D. Martinez agree to 2-year deal

J.D. Martinez has agreed to a contract.

After a lengthy negotiation process threatened the Tigers’ lengthy track record of settling on arbitration-eligible contracts before a hearing, the team signed their All-Star right fielder to a two-year, $18.5 million extension Monday.

According to a person with knowledge of the situation, Martinez is due $6.75 million in 2016 and $11.75 million in 2017. The deal is pending a physical.

This past season, Martinez hit .282 with 38 home runs and 102 RBIs. He earned his first All-Star appearance, won the American League Silver Slugger Award in right field and was a finalist for the Gold Glove Award.
