Red Sox manager John Farrell: Fan safety is a priority

Professionals are professionals for a reason. They aren't supposed to get rattled.

But it was pretty clear on Friday night as soon as part of Brett Lawrie's broken bat flew into the stands and hit Tonya Carpenter in the head, causing life-threatening injuries in front of her husband and child, that even the professionals on the field were disrupted.

Wade Miley ran over to the umpire after the inning and asked him what happened. Players kept poking their heads out of the dugout to peek at the gruesome scene. And on Saturday, Red Sox manager John Farrell called for the utmost importance to be placed on fan safety.
