NBA notebook: Stars have commissioner’s backing in anti-violence message — to a degree

Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade and LeBron James began last week’s ESPY telecast from Las Vegas with a message regarding the need to speak up and work to end the violence that has rocked the nation.

Anthony wrote a column in The Guardian urging athletes to get involved in social issues and not fear losing endorsement deals.

Members of the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx wore T-shirts before a recent game that read, “Change starts with us” and “Justice and accountability” on the front, with the names of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling, each of whom died by police shootings, with a Dallas Police emblem and “Black Lives Matter” on the back.
