Mike Babcock sets bar higher

As roommates in a less-than-luxurious dorm room at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Bruins coach Claude Julien and longtime Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock had plenty of time to share their opinions about the game and about the National Hockey League.

Much of their conversation was likely about on-ice tactics and strategies, but it would be interesting to know if the topic of income inequality came up — the inequality, that is, in the salaries paid NHL players and the guys who coach them.

In 2013-14, the average NHL salary was reportedly $2.58 million. Yet there may have been only a handful of coaches, perhaps only two or three, earning that much.
