Boise State baseball: looking back, and looking ahead

On Tuesday, the Boise State athletic department made a major change when it announced it will drop the wrestling program and immediately begin the process to reinstate baseball.

In 1980, baseball was dropped as a varsity sport because the Big Sky did not sponsor the sport after 1974, along with a changing budget following Title IX, plus a drop in interest. Idaho also dropped baseball the same year, as did SMU, Tulsa and Colorado.

“I went out there one afternoon and there weren’t 15 people in the stands. If something has got to go and there’s no particular interest in it, that seemed like the place to cut,” former athletic director Lyle Smith said in 1994.
