For Toledo coach Matt Campbell, Mike Warren was sort of the one who got away. For new Iowa State coach Matt Campbell, Warren might be the key to the whole rebuild.
Back in January 2014, the little-known three-star back out of Lawton, Oklahoma, came oh-so-close to picking Campbell and the Rockets. What ultimately swayed him was that Campbell’s running backs coach, Louis Ayeni, took a job at Iowa State.
Less than two years later, most of the Toledo staff has joined Ayeni in Ames. Warren chuckles now and says it must have been “meant to be.”
The pairing of Campbell and Warren seems like a fairly perfect marriage of scheme and talent.
