Russian drivers escape FIA ban, Nikita Mazepin clear to race

The FIA has decided not to ban Russian drivers from motorsport in the wake of the country's military invasion of the Ukraine, allowing Haas driver Nikita Mazepin to remain in Formula One this season.

Motor racing's governing body decided Tuesday that a ban would only extend to drivers competing under the flag of Russia or Belarus, but that drivers from both country's will be allowed to continue under a neutral "FIA flag".

The meeting was organised after the International Olympic Committee issued a statement recommending governing bodies within sport not allow the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials in international sporting events.
