AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn sophomore Kelli Murphy and former Tiger Margaret Shirley are set to compete in the 2015 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, which begins Monday in Portland, Ore.
Murphy, a native of Elgin, S.C., earned her way into the field through sectional qualifying, advancing from the Lexington, N.C., qualifier on July 21. She finished fourth out of 81 competitors at Sapona Ridge Country Club with a round of 2-over-par 73.
Shirley earned an automatic exemption into the field by winning the 2014 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship last September. A player for the Tigers from 2004-08 and an assistant coach from 2011-13, Shirley won the 2014 Mid-Amateur title over Julia Potter, 5 and 3, in Noblesville, Ind.
