Former Auburn great Tommy Lorino passes away

Former Auburn running back Tommy Lorino, who helped the Tigers win their first national championship in 1957, died Sunday, the school announced.

Lorino, who also saw time as a punter and defensive back, played three seasons at Auburn (1956-58), leading the school in rushing all three seasons. In 1956, he averaged a nation-best 8.44 yards per carry.

After leaving Auburn, Lorino played one season for the Edmonton Eskimos of the CFL, then later spent 25 seasons as an SEC official, which included two national championship games, before retiring in 2000.
