2011 American League Rookie of the Year Standings

American League Rookie of the Year:

1. Mark Trumbo, 1B, Los Angeles Angels     100.0 Points

Trumbo has been hammering balls since the season began. He is first among American League freshman in home runs (23), RBI’s (69), runs (52), hits (111), doubles (25), and at-bats (430), but is also second in strikeouts (93). If he can improve his plate discipline even a little, Trumbo would become a lock to win the AL Rookie of the Year.

2. Michael Pineda, SP, Seattle Mariners     97.0 Points

Pineda has been the best rookie pitcher in the American League. His numbers have dropped off somewhat since his torrid start, but are still impressive. He leads all rookies with 148 strikeouts and has a 3.73 ERA to go with his 9-7 record. The Mariners are reportedly keeping an eye on his innings pitched and may limit his throwing in the final weeks of the season.

3. Eric Hosmer, 1B, Kansas City Royals     83.0 Points

Hosmer’s been gaining ground in the rookie race ever since his late call-up. His dangerous bat gave him the luxury of hitting cleanup and his glove pushed established veteran Billy Butler into the DH role. His power numbers are getting better (11 home runs, 54 RBI’s), but it’s his batting average that keeps him in the game. He was hovering around .290, but a mini-slump has pushed it down to .272. With only 88 games played, he can raise his average easier than a guy like Trumbo.

4. Jeremy Hellickson, SP, Tampa Bay Rays     82.5 Points

Hellickson was expected to be one of the top rookies in 2011 and hasn’t disappointed. He is 11-8 with a 3.04 ERA and 95 strikeouts. The young Rays hurler is within striking range of taking home the award if he plays at the top of his game for the rest of the year.

5. J.P. Arencibia, C, Toronto Blue Jays     74.0 Points

While Yankees pitcher Ivan Nova is close behind, Arencibia holds down the number five spot. He’s hit 19 home runs and 57 RBI’s while handling the grueling defensive duties of a catcher. If his batting average was higher than .212, he would have a pretty good shot at the award.
