How ASU hockey is essentially a lock for its first NCAA tournament berth

Greg Powers appreciates the confidence some have nationally that Arizona State hockey is safely through to the NCAA tournament no matter what happens this week.

The ASU coach just doesn't think that way, for good reason.

"We don't trust the math," Powers said. "Last year, the team we're going in to play, there was less than a one percent chance they could miss (postseason) and they missed."

His reference is to Minnesota, where No. 12 ASU closes the regular season on Friday and Saturday. The Gophers lost their final four games in 2018 — all to Penn State, two in the Big Ten Tournament — and the Frozen Four hosts were left out of the 16-team NCAA field.
