The Sun Devils earned their first win as a D1 program in convincing fashion.
There was a buzz inside Gila River Arena as 5,385 fans flocked to see the Arizona State Sun Devils began their era as a Division 1 ice hockey program.
That buzz was waiting to erupt as soon as the Sun Devils could get on the board. Less than three minutes into the game Ryan Belonger put one in the net early into the first period, but it was waved off due to a high stick. The history making would have to wait.
It only took a mere couple of minutes as Connor Schmidt tallied the first goal in ASU NCAA D1 history just 7:35 into the game and it was off to the races.
