After having a 62-point campaign with USHL’s Sioux Falls Stampede, Tropp was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in 2007 in the third round.

This is when he decided to play college hockey instead of going to juniors.

He suited up for Michigan State, playing alongside Justin Abdelkader as a freshman.
