Metal detectors to become fixtures at Alabama football games

They tested them out last season. Now, starting in September, they will become a fixture at Alabama's home football games.

The Board of Trustees approved the implementation of walk-through metal detectors at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Monday.

"The university is taking a leadership role in providing a safe environment for our fans," said Ralph Clayton, the university's assistant vice president of public safety.

Approximately 180 metal detectors will be stationed at all gates -- 16 of which will be used for secondary scans. The cost for the equipment is $982,000, Clayton said.

The initiative will allow the university to better enforce its weapons and firearms policy.
