Nick Saban made his smartest coaching move on the month on Monday. He gave the Alabama Crimson Tide a day off. The intelligence of that decision was only reinforced on Tuesday when the team went back on the field in the kind of heat and humidity that makes most of Tuscaloosa grind to a halt or dive for an air-conditioner.

For everyone -- players and coaches, journalists and fans -- the week before the opening game beyond any doubt the worst week of the year. Players are tired of competing against each other. Most of the good stories are either gone or have been milked of their final vestige of freshness.
