STILLWATER, Okla. — Designated hitter Chase Illig smashed the go-ahead grand slam and West Virginia’s bullpen hung on as No. 23 Oklahoma State tried to rally late in a series-clinching 9-8 win on Sunday.
The Mountaineers climbed to 15-10 overall and 4-2 in the Big 12, winning the series after dropping Friday’s opener.
Collin Simpson homered twice for Oklahoma State, which nearly overcame a six-run deficit before falling to 16-11 and 1-5 in the league.
After Conner Dotson injured himself during warmups, WVU freshman Kade Strowd stepped in for his first career start, pitching 4 1/3 innings and allowing two runs on two hits and five walks.
