Carter thrills but can’t will WVU past Zags

Story will be updated.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Jevon Carter became West Virginia’s only scoring option, which gave Gonzaga’s defense an obvious target on the final possession.

The Zags forced Carter into two contested 3s, neither of which came close, and the final 10 seconds ticked away with defenders hawking the Mountaineers point guard so closely that a third try never got off.

Gonzaga advanced 61-58, ending the game on a 6-0 run.

Carter’s 21 weren’t enough to save West Virginia (28-9) from 27-percent shooting.

Jordan Mathews hit the go-ahead 3 and scored 13 points for the Zags (34-2), who also got 13 from Przemek Karnowski and Johnathan Williams.
