Jose Joaquin Arcega-Whiteside is the son of athletes. His mother, Valorie Whiteside played basketball collegiately for Appalachian State from 1984 to 1988. She is the all-time leading scorer in Southern Conference history with 2,944 points and no one has ever come close to matching that mark. She also gathered 1,394 rebounds during her career as she helped lead Appalachian State to back to back championships in the late 80’s.
