The Washington Redskins have fired head coach Jay Gruden after an 0-5 start to the 2019 NFL season. Gruden is out after 5+ seasons that included a 35-50-1 record and just one playoff appearance. The Redskins first have to decide if they want an offensive-minded or defensive-minded head coach. If they want to go offense, Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy should be high on their list of candidates. Bieniemy has been under Andy Reid since 2013 and plays a big role in the Chiefs explosive offense. Jaguars offensive coordinator John DeFilippo is a hot name in NFL circles as he’s had great success as a play-caller for several years. His work with Gardner Minshew this season can’t be overstated. Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich and Browns offensive coordinator Todd Monken should get some consideration as well.
Dan Snyder could promote from within and make offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell the head coach. It would be very similar to the Browns situation with Freddie Kitchens this past year. If Snyder wants to focus on defense, his top candidate should probably be Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus. Eberflus is rising quickly in the coaching ranks and will be an NFL head coach sooner rather than later. Cowboys defensive coordinator Kris Richard is another name to keep an eye on here. Buccaneers defensive coordinator Todd Bowles will likely get a second chance as a head coach. Will the Redskins be that chance?
